I've been watching Long Way Round recently. While they were travelling through Eastern Europe one of the things that struck me was the stark Soviet area decorations and statues. There's something beautiful in the ugly simplicity of it...
I agree with your comment on the "beauty of ugly simplicity", take a look at these. They're all from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, and it's one of the few places that hasn't been touched since the Soviet days, and that's definitely one way to describe it. Haunting would be another.
This picture is so happy though! I like it. You want the headphones; I'd take the jacket.
Thanks for that link, I have seen photos of the Exclusion Zone before but nothing like that collection. It's amazing after all those years of abandonment what still remains and what does not.
I guess everyone spins their own meaning on things, when I saw the old Soviet Star I didn't see it as a reminder of the past. I saw it as a goal, something to reach for, optimism.
That's generally how I see it. Socialism can be made to work in our lifetime, we just need to get there. I think more people are realizing that what with the current global issues.
Thanks, I enjoyed working on this one. The colours and the themes I played with here just really pop to my eye. So much so I've adopted them for my icon and in my next piece.
That reminds me of a photograph of my mom in the eighties in Greece; she was sitting by a circus poster and beside that was a russian poster or something. It's kind of funny
